A number of residents surrounding the former Brookside property are concerned with the number of break-ins happening at the facility.
The property has been vacant for a number of years since the Ontario government sold the property.
While the property was for sale, there were a number of encampments, but once sold, they were removed and a fence went up around the perimeter along the sidewalk.
Since the fence has come down there have been a number of break-ins at the property that are concerning neighbours living in the area.
The break-ins are one thing, but residents are concerned of the potential fire danger of some of the buildings in relation to their property.
One resident told Today’s Northumberland it seems like a “free for all” with people entering the facility.
There are a number of holes that are cut in the fence that once housed young offenders. Doors to some of the buildings and even the main gate is open.
No Trespassing signs seem to have little effect.
“All of the copper has been removed from the two largest white buildings and both have been flooded,” said one resident.
Cobourg Police told the resident they have tried contacting the property manager in London, Ontario, but it doesn’t seem to be the correct number.
“On May 28th, I let the Police Chief (Paul VandeGraaf) know with photos of the initial hole in the fence.
He was sent video by another Cottesmore resident of flashlights inside the buildings and nothing was done.”
