St. Mary Thunder Defeated in OFSAA Girls Hockey Quarterfinals

Cobourg’s St. Mary Thunder were eliminated from the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) girls’ A/AA hockey championship in the quarterfinals by the defending provincial champion from Stratford.

The hosts from St. Mary Catholic Secondary School, ranked ninth out of 16 teams, advanced to the top eight before dropping a 4-1 decision to the St. Michael CSS Warriors on Wednesday afternoon at the Cobourg Community Centre’s Grace Bowen Arena.

Maeve Aird scored the lone St. Mary goal in the game that was tied 1-1 after one period before St. Michael pulled away, including two third-period markers. Evalina Butchart and Brielle Osborne drew assists on Aird’s tally.

St. Mary qualified for the quarterfinals with a 4-2 win over No. 15 E.S.C. Theriault from Timmins on Wednesday morning to conclude round-robin pool play. Mya Lorefice, Anna Collins, Isabelle Herron and Butchart scored for the Thunder and Aird registered three assists.

Both teams had 1-1 records entering the matchup and with the win the Thunder placed second in Pool D.
St. Mary Thunder team members, as listed on the OFSAA website, are: Kinsley Patfield, Evalina Butchart, Maeve Aird, Isabelle Herron, Anna Crowley, Addison Morris, Anna Collins, Kayden Greer, Mya Lorefice, Brynn O’Leary, Brielle Osborne, Stella Howe, Alanna Masters and goaltenders Kennedy Bick and Lily Ryan.

In the other quarterfinal matchups Wednesday afternoon, No. 4 seed Georgian Bay District Secondary School defeated No. 16 Kincardine District Secondary School 3-1 at the CCC Bowl Arena, No. 13 Lambton Central Collegiate & Vocational Institute from Petrolia blanked No. 7 St. Charles College of Sudbury 2-0 at the Jack Burger Sports Complex in Port Hope and No. 1 Crestwood Preparatory College from Toronto earned a 5-1 win over No. 2 Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School from St. Catharines at the Baltimore Recreation Centre.

The semifinals are set for Thursday morning at the CCC. St. Michael, which won the 2025 OFSAA title, will face Crestwood Prep at 8 a.m. in the Bowl Arena and Lambton Central will take on Georgian Bay starting at 8:15 a.m. in the Grace Bowen Arena.

In the afternoon, the gold medal game will begin at 1 p.m. in the Bowl and the bronze medal game at 1:15 in the Bowen Arena.
