Good Friday brought near-perfect spring conditions to the Lake Ontario shoreline, drawing residents and visitors alike to the waterfronts in Cobourg and Port Hope.
With sunshine and mild temperatures, people flocked to the boardwalks, beaches and piers, taking advantage of a welcome break from cooler weather. Families, couples and solo walkers could be seen enjoying the fresh air, many lingering along the water’s edge to take in the view.
In Port Hope, the annual spring trout run was in full swing, attracting anglers to both Gage’s Creek and the Ganaraska River. While many cast their lines in permitted areas, officers with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry were actively patrolling to ensure regulations were being followed.
Several people were charged after being caught fishing under the railway bridge. Regulations stipulate that anglers are only permitted to fish south of the railway bridges in both Port Hope and Cobourg.
Further north, crowds gathered at Corbett’s Dam, where elevated water levels from recent rainfall helped push trout upstream along the “Ganny.” The result was a steady and impressive flow of fish navigating the dam, offering a memorable sight for spectators.
From quiet walks along the shoreline to the excitement of the trout run, the day served as a reminder that spring has firmly arrived in Northumberland County.
