Video – St. Mary Students Do Their Part to Help Save the Environment

In Local

St. Mary Secondary students brought the classroom to the waterfront on Friday, June 6, 2025 to learn more about how they can help save the environment.

Allyson Demoe who is a teacher at St. Mary Secondary School brought a number of grade 10 students down that from her class and other students to Cobourg’s waterfront to learn more about how to save the environment.

Demoe said the class project is about Enviroteams and they learn as much about re-using, rinsing and collecting recyclables.

“The culmination of the project and in conjunction with the Canadian Ambassador’s for Plastic Waste Program we’ve picked up some tally sheets and we’ve got some gloves, reusable bags and we’re collecting and tallying all the trash we find.”

It’s important for everyone to learn about saving the environment in anyway we can, but for the students it’s their future.

“When I talk to my students in class about what they care about, what matters to them it’s the environment and their future.”

Demoe said through learning about the environment, she’s noticed students reusing coffee cups. Not because they have too, but because they’ve witnessed the impact on the environment.

With taking them to the waterfront, “it’s a one-on-one, in your face experience.”

“Once we get out into nature and actually do things it really impacts the kids.”
