Perfect weather and spectacular blooms helped draw record crowds to the 14th annual Warkworth Lilac Festival over the weekend.
Thousands of lilacs were in full bloom along the 2.6-kilometre Millennium Lilac Trail as visitors flocked to the event on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31, 2026.
The trail featured more than 80 varieties of lilacs, while 40 vendors offered local products, food, and family-friendly activities throughout the village.
“We are having the time of our lives,” said festival co-chair Kim Gallant.
“Every lilac is out here showing its face today and everyone is happy to see them.”
Organizers strive to keep the festival focused on the experience rather than the commercial side, encouraging visitors to simply enjoy the blooms and the community atmosphere. Among the activities this year was a scavenger hunt for children.
The festival typically attracts about 5,000 visitors over two days, but Gallant believes that milestone was reached on Saturday alone, making 2026 the largest-attended festival in its history.
The event began after a local resident suggested using the Millennium Trail as a way to attract visitors to Warkworth.
“The town got involved and planted lilacs and it grew from there,” said Gallant.
Visitors travelled from as far away as Switzerland, Vancouver, and Montreal to attend, although the majority of festival-goers came from the Greater Toronto Area.
With ideal weather conditions and the lilacs at peak bloom, organizers say this year’s festival showcased the trail at its very best and introduced thousands of visitors to the charm of Warkworth.
