Video – Photo Gallery – Blue Heron Joins Salmon for Annual Ganaraska Run

In Local, Photo Gallery

The salmon weren’t the only ones enjoying the Ganaraska River in Port Hope Thursday afternoon.

As hundreds of salmon continued their annual journey upstream on September 3, 2026, a blue heron quietly kept watch from the riverbank south of Walton Street.

The heron, a familiar sight along the Ganaraska, appeared completely unfazed by the steady stream of people stopping to watch the salmon make their way through the river.

It remained in the area for much of the afternoon, seemingly content to let the crowds admire the spectacular annual migration.

The Ganaraska was running high following heavy rainfall the previous day, adding to the power and movement of the river as the salmon battled their way upstream.

For those who came to see the fish, it was a beautiful reminder that the annual salmon run is one of the most remarkable sights along the Ganaraska.

And on Thursday, the salmon had a little company — with one blue heron getting a front-row seat to the show.
