There was so much to do in a Canadian winter paradise on Thursday, January 15, 2026 in the Cobourg area.
A heavy snowfall was predicted for this area of the province and that is exactly what we got.
It was expected the area may have got up to 25 centimetres of the white stuff and it’s likely that’s what the area got.
But in true Canadian fashion, people made the most of it.
Jen Poole decided to take a tour of Cobourg using her cross-country skiis.
Poole said she started at Elgin and Division Street and made her way down to the harbour area.
“It’s a snow day today, so a lot of things are closed so I popped on my skiis and I’m going down to the Cobourg pier and check it out.”
Poole said along the way there was a lot of encouragement.
“Somebody pulled over and said “what a go.”
“It’s cold and there is not much else to do and things are closed. So people are seeing me and they are waving and honking so it’s really nice.”
Poole said this year has been “pretty darn good” for skiing and with the latest snowfall it’s going to “perk things up.”
Shortly after 11 a.m. there was a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 401 westbound just east of Port Hope that shut down the westbound lanes.
A transport truck jack-knifed and other vehicles were involved, but thankfully there were only minor injuries.
Highway 401 westbound was closed for just over an hour and Northumberland OPP officers directed traffic northbound on Burnham Street along the Emergency Detour Route (EDR).
Hamilton Township Public Works Department helped avoid confusion by placing barricades along Telephone Road, but drivers still seemed to be confused.
While directing traffic at Burnham Street and the exit to Highway 401 westbound, a Northumberland OPP officer narrowly missed being struck by a vehicle traveling southbound.
The officer was directing traffic off the highway, and a southbound vehicle seemed oblivious to the officer and proceeded through the intersection.
Highway 401 east of Cobourg was snow covered, but there were no reports of any major collisions.
It wasn’t just people who took advantage of the snow, dogs seemed to enjoy the powder as well.
