Port Hope Invites Residents to “Name that Snowplow” in Lighthearted Contest

The Municipality of Port Hope is inviting residents of all ages to help name two snowplows in a lighthearted contest to showcase creativity, humour, and community pride.

Submissions will be accepted from September 2 to 24 at engage.porthope.ca/name-that-plow, just in time for the 2025/26 winter season. Submissions can be inspired by puns, local landmarks, or famous figures and residents are encouraged to try working in words like snow, plow, or blizzard. Be creative, just remember to keep it short, catchy, fun, and appropriate.

“Our snowplow operators work around the clock each winter to keep our community safe and moving, and this contest is a fun way to shine a spotlight on their efforts,” said Mayor Olena Hankivsky. “We’re excited to see the creativity of Port Hope residents as they help us name two of our plows. It’s a playful initiative that also highlights the important role our Roads team plays in delivering essential winter services.”

Once submissions close, our Roads team will narrow the entries down to a shortlist of finalists. Then, from October 8 to 29, the community is invited back to the webpage to cast a vote for their favourite name. The winning names will be announced on November 15, 2025, with the champions earning full bragging rights and a photo opportunity alongside their newly named plow.

This Name that Plow initiative is fun, but Port Hope takes snow-clearing operations seriously. The Municipality has a fleet of more than 11 vehicles, including tandem axle salter/snowplow units, a large grader, a sidewalk machine, and pickup trucks equipped with plows and salters. Our 15 operators use this equipment to clear and maintain more than 681 lane-kilometres of roads.

This winter, our snowplows (and their skilled operators) will be out in all conditions to keep Port Hope safe and moving. Let’s give these winter heroes the spotlight they deserve!
