The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) would like to remind visitors to take steps to help prevent fires and respect burn bans.
Due to the ongoing, extremely dry conditions, local communities and visitors must do what they can to prevent fires from starting locally. There are currently no wildfires in the immediate vicinity of the Ganaraska Forest, though there are several burning in neighbouring jurisdictions.
Current fire bans / restrictions for most of the region, including all of Northumberland County, the City of Kawartha Lakes and Municipality of Clarington, among others, are in place to help prevent wildfires from starting. Everyone must do their part to help prevent fires.
Sources of open flame never permitted on GRCA property
Under the Conservation Authorities Act, both residents and visitors are reminded that open flames, campfires, barbecues, fireworks and other sources of fire are not permitted on GRCA properties, Conservation Areas or in the Ganaraska Forest at any time.
Additionally, vehicle exhaust and components can be a source of extreme heat, which can become an ignition source. Be extra cautious while operating vehicles in forested or grassy areas, including the operation of off-road vehicles. Please ensure a spark arrestor is installed and working properly before operating your off-road vehicle.
Smokers are asked to pay additional attention to posted signage, as well as ensuring cigarette butts are put out and removed from vulnerable areas. Please consider not smoking on trails or in the vicinity of grassy or wooded areas.
Early detection of wildfire is the next step to protecting our local area
Local fire departments are asking anyone that sees / smells smoke or sees an active fire to call 9-1-1 immediately. Regardless of where you think the fire may be, local fire departments are urging visitors and residents to report sightings to 9-1-1 immediately.
Early detection will help local fire departments and emergency services to respond as quickly as possible.
