Municipality of Port Hope Spring Hydrant Flushing Program

In Local

The spring Hydrant Maintenance Program will be underway on weekdays starting April 7 until May 16, 2025. This is important upkeep to ensure that adequate water flow and pressure is available throughout the urban area of the community.

While the hydrant flushing is taking place in your area, avoid doing your laundry as water may be at lower pressure than normal and rust may occur.

Hydrant flushing schedule:
West Side of Ganaraska River – Monday to Friday mornings: 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

East Side of Ganaraska River – Monday to Friday afternoons: 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Other updates
Did you know our hydrants are painted different colours (blue, green, orange, and red) to represent the amount of flow coming from each hydrant? The fire department relies on those colours (hydrant flows) to determine how much water can be taken per minute. Changes to infrastructure can affect the flow of each hydrant. Staff will be performing flow testing on approximately 125 hydrants. Once the flow tests are completed, the hydrants will be repainted if necessary. This project is set to take four years with a quarter of the Urban area hydrants tested each year.

Staff will also be adding reflective ear markers to the hydrants. This can be seen in many surrounding municipalities. This increases the visibility of the hydrants for our Fire Fighters during low light conditions.
