Editorial – These Days There Are Four Sides to Every Story

Editorial – The adage there are three sides to every story and somewhere there is the truth needs to be updated.

Since last week there have been rumours, social media posts about a incident at the Cobourg Dog Park that occurred on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

People have made vicious comments about the incident online.

Today’s Northumberland reported a woman said she was struck at the dog park after an argument ensued regarding whether dogs should have been on a leash.

Police stated in one release there were three individuals involved in a verbal dispute.

Today’s Northumberland has watched a 46-second video of the incident. It doesn’t show the beginning, or the end.

But what it does show are four individuals engaged in a heated discussion.

People are taking photos/videos of each other during the video.

There is strong language in the video, but the most calmest person in the video is the girlfriend of the suspect. She takes being called names and all the time on the video maintains her composure.

Two women who spoke with Today’s Northumberland stated in a previous story that they did use foul language. The video clearly shows they did.

The video shows the person who was allegedly assaulted stating the woman has mental health issues. The other woman states the suspect is a “such a fucking little asshole” and said to the suspects girlfriend that she would, “rip your lashes off bitch.“

Shortly after an altercation occurs – but it’s hard to tell what happens.

The girlfriend said during the altercation she was dragged and her ear rings were pulled out.

Violence against anyone, male or female is uncalled for, unacceptable and it is a criminal offence.

This is a complicated case where one photo clearly doesn’t show the entire event or how the injury happened.

People need to hold back judgement and let the courts decide.

The adage that started this column should be updated for the current times – there are now four sides to every story – two sides who take part in the event, social media – and somewhere in that mess is the truth.

A Cobourg man has been charged with assault. Cobourg Police have released his name, but it’s questionable why the name was released where there has been arguably much more serious incidents where no name has been released.

It’s unknown whether the investigation is continuing.
