The sound of skates cutting across the ice and laughter from the benches filled the Jack Burger Sports Complex in Port Hope as firefighters, paramedics and police gathered for a day that was about far more than just hockey.

The 18th annual Port Hope Firefighters Association Hockey Tournament took place on Friday, April 10, 2026, bringing together eight teams for a full slate of games, friendly competition and plenty of storytelling.

For Association President, Bob Cranley, the tournament is as much about connection as it is about the scoreboard.

“A lot of us work alongside or work together in a work environment so it’s nice to come out and play three games of hockey and share some stories.”

Each team hit the ice three times throughout the day, battling for bragging rights in what has become a tradition among firefighters in the region. While the games were competitive, the focus remained firmly on camaraderie and giving back.

The tournament also serves as a fundraiser for the Port Hope Firefighters Association, with this year’s proceeds going toward refurbishing the department’s first motorized fire truck — a 1929 Bickle pumper that marked the transition from horse-drawn equipment to modern firefighting.

Cranley said the historic truck represents an important piece of the department’s legacy, and restoring it helps preserve that history for future generations.

As one of the final tournaments of the hockey season, the event continues to draw strong participation year after year. Cranley added the association is grateful to all the teams who took part, helping make the day another success both on and off the ice.
Teams taking part were Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services, Cobourg Fire Department, Alnwick/Haldimand Township Fire Department, Cameco ERT, Durham Paramedics, Northumberland Paramedics, Peterborough Paramedics, OPG ERT
