Lots of Time Left For the Fall Salmon Run in Port Hope

In Editor Choice, Local

There is still time left for anglers from the Fall salmon run in the Ganaraska River in Port Hope.

By the looks of the anglers and salmon in Port Hope there is still lots of time to try your luck along the “Ganny.”

On Saturday, September 18, 2021 a number of anglers were along the Ganaraska River with even more people along the banks and bridges stopping to watch the fish swim upstream.

The fish sanctuary at Corbett’s dam was extremely busy throughout the day as people stopped and took photos of the salmon trying to make their way up the fish ladder.

Two natives, Tony (age 22) who didn’t want last name used and Douglas Knott (age 36) from Curve Lake First Nations north of Peterborough got two fish from the sanctuary.

Tony said they only took two fish for dinner, but were glad to answer questions by people who were curious why they were fishing in a restricted area. As First Nations the two men can fish anywhere along the river.

“I understand where they are coming from 100%. If they ask the question, I’m more than happy to explain it to them.”

Tony was using a compound bow so he could pick the fish he wanted for supper.

Both men said there is still lots of time left for the Fall salmon run and it hasn’t peaked yet.

Further down the Ganaraska River, south of Jocelyn Street, anglers were mostly successful with patience while spectators enjoyed watched from nearby bridges and along the banks of the river.
