Residents of Rosewood Estates in Cobourg spent a gorgeous afternoon at the Castleton Sports Club on Saturday, September 18, 2021.
Approximately 40 residents were bused out to the facility to enjoy a delicious meal of hamburgers, hot dogs, corn, salad, ice cream and more, but that wasn’t all that took place for the residents.
They also had the chance to go for a ride on a horse drawn carriage by Castleton Sports Club President Kevin White who brought his horse and buggy out for the residents.
Guests included Cramahe Township Mayor Mandy Martin and Northumberland/Peterborough South MPP David Piccini.
Activity Coordinator for Rosewood Estates, Melissa Davey said she was looking for something for the residents that wouldn’t put them with a large number of people.
When she spoke with her brother Stacy who is one of the founders of the Castleton Sports Club they both thought it was a great idea to bring the residents to the Club which has a canteen and large area to socialize.
“We were super excited to come. We’ve been talking about it all week.”
When Davey showed up at work on Saturday, the residents were all set to go.
“After the last two years it’s been rough on the whole world and we needed somewhere where we could get out, breathe, relax and not worry. And this is the perfect spot.”
Cramahe Township Mayor Mandy Martin said it was a wonderful event, but “there are always wonderful events at the Castleton Sports Club.”
“It’s all for the people and they want everybody to enjoy it.”
The Castleton Sports Club is run solely by volunteers who want to support their community and were excited to host the event.
“Here we are in the outdoors. Beautiful day, appreciation of what we have in Northumberland – it doesn’t get any better.”
Jeff Turney who is one of the founding members of the club and sits on the Executive said, “the second I saw the first (person) come off the bus and saw their face, it’s worth all the time we put into this.”
A number of the residents came off the bus with their own lawn chairs and couldn’t wait to sit by the fire pit waiting for it to be started.
A surprise at the end of the afternoon was when Municipal Solutions, president and Chief Executive Officer, John Mutton presented a cheque for $5,000 to President of the Castleton Sports Club, Kevin White.
Mutton said it was a way of giving back to the community and when Northumberland/Peterborough South MPP David Piccini said it was solely run by volunteers, Mutton knew it was the organization where he wanted to donate the money.
