Humane Society Asking For Public’s Help After 11 Dogs Surrendered Through Investigation

The Northumberland Humane Society (NHS) is looking for support from the community after eleven Akbash-type dogs were surrendered through the investigations department. The dog’s range in age from 9 weeks to 3 years old and will require patient owners who are willing to train them.

Most of the dogs lived in isolation and have not been properly socialized however the Northumberland Humane Society says they all have great temperaments.

“The dogs were very scared when they first arrived” says Tex Ridder, Animal Welfare Inspector for the Northumberland Humane Society. “with some love and treats, we are confident that they will be great family pets.”

The NHS wants to remind owners that if they are feeling overwhelmed or in need or supportive services to reach out to the organization.

“We encourage pet owners who are having a difficult time providing appropriate care for their pets to contact the humane society” says Kate Lennan, General Manager of the Northumberland Humane Society. “The NHS is here to assist the community and connect pet owners with any resources they may need.”

With the kennels full, the NHS is looking for donations of dog food, martingale collars, and blankets and towels to help with the sudden influx of dogs. Donations can be dropped of at the Northumberland Humane Society located at 371 Ward Street in Port Hope.
