As Earth Day approaches, Northumberland County is encouraging residents to join in building awareness of the importance of preserving and protecting our environment during local Earth Day activities, taking place the week of April 17.
“Earth day, which takes place on April 22 each year, is an opportunity to come together to make a positive impact on the environment, and the health and well-being of our community,” states County Warden Mandy Martin. “County Council invites residents to participate in the County’s Earth Day initiatives to broaden their awareness of environmental issues and preserve and protect Northumberland’s unique and beautiful natural assets for future generations.”
The County invites community members to join in the following activities planned to celebrate Earth Day:
· Keep the County Clean Challenge – a week-long litter clean-up event: Delivered in partnership with area municipalities, this friendly competition invites residents to register with their local municipality to participate in cleaning up litter and waste in their communities, including, roadsides, parks, nature-trails, etc. Last year, 1,960 volunteers removed 9,800 kilograms of litter across the county during the week-long event. The Town of Cobourg took home the title for the highest number of volunteers, while the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand achieved recognition for ‘hardest working volunteers’, with teams removing the greatest quantity of litter per person (42 kilograms). This year, the challenge takes place during the week of Earth Day, from April 17 to 22.
· The 20-Minute Makeover: On Friday, April 21, individuals are encouraged to spend a few minutes beautifying an area in their neighbourhood, such as a local park, their place of work, school yard or trail. No registration is required – simply grab a bag and some gloves and head outdoors.
Earth Day, introduced in 1970, has been celebrated around the world on April 22. With the growing risks and realities of climate change and an increasing focus on protecting the earth’s natural resources, this day inspires collective action for a more sustainable future. Northumberland County is committed to promoting and supporting positive actions to improve sustainability, preserve natural assets, and create a healthier environment.
