Pesky Squirrels Loving Christmas Magic in Cobourg – Again

In Local

Each year citizens of Cobourg and surrounding area aren’t just the only ones who look forward to Christmas Magic.

Squirrels obviously enjoy the time of year when strands of Christmas lights adorn trees in Victoria Park.

But it’s not the colourful lights the squirrels enjoy – it’s the wires.

And in fact, they actually do like the Christmas lights sometimes mistaking them for nuts says an online article.

Electrical wires which are covered in a soy-based coating are a tasty treat for the little critters.

One report states spraying the wires with minty mouthwash, pepper spray, citrusy solutions or a store-bought squirrel repellent may do the trick.

It’s unknown if Cobourg has tried anything to deter the squirrels, but with the problem happening every year and workers/volunteers sometimes replacing the strands as soon as they’ve been put up, it’s safe to say it’s cost the town thousands of dollars.

Squirrels, rats and rabbits also have been known to chew through wires in the engine compartment of vehicles for the same reason.
