A late-night search involving multiple emergency services at Cobourg’s Victoria Beach ended without finding anyone after a report of a person believed to be in the water Thursday night.

The call came into the Ontario Provincial Police shortly before 9:30 p.m. on August 27, 2026. OPP subsequently notified emergency services in Cobourg after receiving information that someone may have been in Lake Ontario near the swimming markers south of Victoria Beach.

The report prompted a coordinated response involving Cobourg Police Service, the Cobourg Fire Department, Northumberland County Paramedics and the Canadian Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard launched a search of the waters in the area where the person was reportedly spotted.

At the same time, firefighters and police officers searched along the shoreline and waterline, looking for any indication that someone could be in distress.

The Coast Guard vessel also launched a number of flares to illuminate the darkened waters and assist crews with the search.

Despite the coordinated effort, crews were unable to locate anyone in the water.

At approximately 10:43 p.m., the search was called off.

There were no reports of anyone being found or requiring medical assistance as a result of the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the original report were not immediately available.
