A tanker driver hauling dangerous goods was arrested for impaired driving on Highway 401 on Sunday, June 6, 2021.
At approximately 10 a.m. Ontario Provincial Police were notified of a tandem tanker truck heading westbound on Highway 401 near Cobourg.
A Highway Safety Division OPP officer noticed the tanker truck and observed the tanker truck failing to maintain its lane.
When the officer pulled the vehicle over approximately two kilometres west of Burnham Street and detected the odour of alcohol on the driver.
After failing the standardized field sobriety tests and the driver was arrested at the scene and taken to the Northumberland OPP Detachment in Cobourg.
The tanker truck was driven to a compound near the OPP Detachment where the license plates were removed from the cab and the cab was impounded for seven days.
The driver’s license was also suspended for seven days.
There was 57,000 litres of highly flammable petroleum inside the two containers that was being hauled down Highway 401.
The 63-year-old Brampton driver was charged with impaired driving and a log book violation and was released with a future court date pending.
Today’s Northumberland tried to speak with the driver when he was released by police, but he would only say that he wasn’t the driver, even though he was wearing a logo from the company and was identified as the driver.
