Motorists continuing to drive the wrong way on a one-way street in downtown Cobourg are creating an ongoing safety concern for both pedestrians and other drivers.
On Saturday, July 11, and again on Sunday, numerous vehicles were observed travelling north on McGill Street toward Queen Street, despite the street being clearly designated as one-way southbound.
The issue appears to involve drivers exiting the nearby municipal parking lot and turning the wrong direction onto McGill Street, putting themselves on a collision course with vehicles travelling legally southbound.
The Town of Cobourg appears to have installed additional one-way signage within the parking lot in an effort to better direct motorists. Despite the new signage, several drivers either failed to notice it or chose to ignore it, continuing north against traffic.
Wrong-way driving significantly increases the risk of head-on collisions and also creates a hazard for pedestrians and cyclists who may not expect vehicles to be travelling in the wrong direction.
The problem is not new. Today’s Northumberland has documented similar incidents in previous summers, raising ongoing concerns about driver awareness and whether additional measures may be needed to prevent motorists from entering the one-way street in the wrong direction.
