Video – Hydro One Had Planned to Remove Tree Before It Fell in July 1 Storm

In Local

A large tree that blocked Hoskin Road for approximately 12 hours following a brief overnight storm on July 1, 2026, had already been identified as a hazard and was scheduled to be removed later this month.

The storm struck the area overnight on July 1, bringing down the mature tree across Hoskin Road, just north of Danforth Road East. The fallen tree completely blocked the roadway while also affecting nearby Hydro One infrastructure.

Hydro One crews, who were responding to numerous storm-related power outages throughout the area, worked to clear the scene before the road was reopened approximately 12 hours later.

Residents living along Hoskin Road said they had previously alerted Hydro One about the aging tree, expressing concerns it could fall across the roadway or damage power lines—both of which occurred during the storm.

A Hydro One representative confirmed to Today’s Northumberland that the tree had been inspected earlier this year.

“A local forestry technician inspected the tree this spring after it was reported as a potential hazard, and plans were underway to remove it on July 14. Given the tree’s size, its removal required a planned power outage in the area, road closure permits and specialized equipment, including a large crane. While the tree came down during a storm in late June, we thank customers who reported the hazard.”

Hydro One added that forestry crews cleared vegetation from the power lines in the area in 2021, and the lines where the tree was located were not scheduled for vegetation maintenance this year.

The utility is encouraging residents to report potential tree hazards near power lines by calling 1-800-434-1235.
