A quiet rural property known for rest and relaxation became the scene of an intense firefight Monday afternoon, as multiple departments battled a stubborn blaze at Northumberland Heights Wellness Retreat and Spa.
At approximately 3 p.m. on April 6, 2026, Alnwick/Haldimand Township Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at the retreat, located at 795 Northumberland Heights Road, with Hamilton Township Fire Department providing mutual aid.
When crews arrived, heavy smoke was already pushing from the west end of the building and through rooftop exhaust systems — a sign the fire had gained a foothold, said Alnwick/Haldimand Deputy Fire Chief Rob Gourd.
Firefighters made an aggressive initial attack, advancing into the building and locating the fire in the basement laundry room.
“The initial attack crew went in and got a knockdown in the laundry room,” Gourd said. “But prior to their entry, it had already spread considerably.”
Operating in a rural area posed additional challenges, with no nearby hydrants. Tanker trucks were used to shuttle water to the scene, maintaining a steady supply as crews worked to contain the fire.
As conditions worsened, firefighters encountered extreme heat in the basement, forcing them to withdraw from the structure for safety. Flames had extended beyond the point of origin, requiring a shift in strategy.
Cobourg Fire Department was called in to assist, bringing a ladder truck that allowed crews to cut holes in the roof to improve ventilation and check for fire extension. Firefighters then mounted a coordinated exterior and interior assault, working from the south side of the building while venting heat and smoke.
Once conditions improved, crews re-entered the structure and brought the main body of fire under control.
Ventilation efforts continued as firefighters cut multiple holes in the roof to check for hidden fire spread in the attic and ceiling spaces — a critical step in preventing rekindling.
Despite the intensity of the fire, no injuries were reported.
The cause remains under investigation, but early indications suggest the fire originated in the laundry room area.
While the structure remains standing, officials say the damage is extensive.
“It’s going to be considerable,” Gourd said, noting early estimates place the loss at more than $1 million.
For a place designed for healing and retreat, Monday’s fire has left behind a long road to recovery.
