The overnight Warming Room located at Northumberland County Headquarters—555 Courthouse Road, Cobourg—will remain open until the morning of April 13, 2026, as seasonal temperatures begin to improve.
“Originally scheduled to close March 31, this extension ensures that vulnerable residents continue to have access to a safe, warm space during the final weeks of colder weather,” said Warden Bob Crate. “On behalf of County Council, I want to sincerely thank Town of Cobourg Council and staff for their responsiveness and collaboration in supporting this extension under the ECE By-law. Their partnership has been essential to the success of this service throughout the winter.”
Since opening in late November, the Warming Room has provided overnight respite for individuals experiencing homelessness, ensuring access to washrooms and light refreshments. With the community’s only homeless shelter at 310 Division Street, Cobourg frequently operating at or near capacity, the Warming Room has ensured that more unsheltered residents have access to safe indoor space during the harsh winter months.
The Warden also expressed appreciation for the efforts of County staff who coordinated this service and sustained it throughout the season: “This initiative would not have been possible without the dedication of our Social Services team, Facilities team and others, who worked relentlessly to establish and operate the Warming Room under tight timelines and evolving needs. Their commitment to supporting some of our most vulnerable residents is evident every day.”
He continued: “We are deeply grateful, as well, to local organizations and volunteers who stepped forward in such meaningful ways, providing meals, supplies, and ongoing support. This truly has been a cross-community effort.”
Finally, the Warden noted: “We also want to recognize the individuals who used the Warming Room, for their cooperation and respect for the space. This helped ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all.”
As the winter season concludes, County Council will continue the ongoing work with staff to explore longer-term approaches to winter warming services.
“While this temporary service has helped address immediate needs, we recognize the importance of developing more sustainable, long-term solutions,” stated the Warden. “That work is already underway as we plan for the 2026–2027 winter season and beyond.”
The Warming Room will continue operating under its current schedule until closing the morning of April 13, 2026.
