Port Hope Mayor Olena Hankivsky has issued a challenge to the other six Northumberland County municipalities to support the Northumberland Fare Share Food Bank.

On the agenda of Wednesday’s meeting of the county council Social Services Committee meeting was the motion her council had passed, acknowledging food insecurity as “a significant and growing concern across Northumberland County,” which the committee received for information – along with Hankivsky’s challenge.

“We made a deliberate decision at our council to make a donation to the food bank of $20,000, recognizing the increased rates of need and use of the food bank in our community,” the mayor said.

“And I think some of my colleagues were going to encourage me to challenge some of the other municipalities to follow suit.”

“A very generous contribution by the Port Hope council,” committee Chair John Logel commented.

“It’s coming up at the other municipal council meetings, I believe.”
