Current Competes at World Cross Country Running Championships, Signs Nike Contract

In Local, Sports

Kate Current, originally from Precious Corners just north of Cobourg, competed for Canada in the mixed relay at the World Athletics Cross County Championships on Saturday in Tallahasse, Florida.

Current, along with teammates Foster Malleck, Jean-Simon Desgagnes and Regan Yee, placed ninth out of 15 teams in a time of 23 minutes 43 seconds. Australia won the race in 22:23.

As previously reported by Today’s Northumberland, Current was a decorated runner at Cobourg Collegiate Institute and Western University. She also represented Canada in the women’s 1,500 metres at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Current just announced she has signed a sponsorship contract with Nike.

“This one means a lot. I finished my university eligibility nearly four years ago and transitioned into professional running without a sponsor – like most Canadian uni athletes do. Since then, I’ve represented Team Canada five times and became an Olympian. I’ve also found myself on the start line countless times as the only unsponsored athlete in the field,” Current posted on Instagram.

“Over the past few years, that reality shaped how I approached the sport. The mindset has evolved as the goals have changed, but the approach hasn’t: show up and put in the work. This mindset has extended beyond the track, where I’ve been working as an engineer to support this dream. We made it work. I’m now incredibly proud to have signed a professional contract to keep building this career.”
