SIU Finds Officer Did Not Commit Criminal Offence in Connection with Peterborough Arrest

In Police Blotter

In the morning of May 17, 2025, police received a call about a man walking naked in the area of Park Street North in Peterborough.

A Peterborough Police Service officer located the man and attempted to speak with him. A struggle ensued, and the two fell onto the roadway.

Rising to their feet, the officer discharged his conducted energy weapon at the man multiple times.

The struggle continued and the man dispossessed the officer of his flashlight and used it to hit the officer several times.

The officer fought back and deployed his OC spray.

At about this time, other officers arrived to assist.

The man was tackled to the ground and officers were eventually able to subdue the man and restrain him in handcuffs.

He subsequently spit at an officer, and the officer reacted by delivering one or two short punches to the face.

At hospital, the 24-year-old man was diagnosed with facial fractures.

On his assessment of the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s arrest and injuries.
