The Concert Band of Cobourg held their first Summer Concert Series in Victoria Park on Tuesday, July 9, 2025.
For decades the Concert Band of Cobourg has played on Tuesday evenings starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Victoria Park bandshell (weather permitting).
With the setting sun shining on the bandshell, a wide variety of music including marches are played each week to an appreciative audience relaxing in the park. By the end of the evening the moon was rising over Lake Ontario – a perfect summers evening.
Emcee Diana Storen introduced the songs the band would be playing, but prior to the traditional singing of O’Canada for the final song, Storen made a announcement of a song that has a special meaning with the band.
“Music is that universal language which unifies the spirits of mankind, -American/Canadian woodwind player Paul Horn.”
“We played this next piece of music in Plattsburgh, New York, for 18 years in a row, from 2002 until 2019. The visits ended in part due to COVID-19.
United We Stand was meant to acknowledge the strong bond between Canada and the US.
But it can also refer to our collective solidarity now, as we confront the challenges that presently face us.
It can suggest the mutual support and co-operation needed at a difficult time.
This is not the only time this summer that we will be playing it.
This is the chorus:
United we stand, divided we fall
And if our backs should ever be against the wall,
We’ll be together, you and I.”
