Looking ahead, Cobourg council is already planning for the Oct. 26, 2026, municipal election with a motion at its April meeting to approve internet voting.

The vote at council approved execution of an agreement with Simply Voting Inc. for these municipal and school board elections at a total cost of $34,850 based on 17,000 eligible electors.

The original motion was to approve the use of telephone voting as well as internet, but Councillor Miriam Mutton moved for an amendment to remove telephone voting as an option.

“Quite a few complaints I heard last time,” Mutton said.

She noted that, for internet voting, there are places an elector can go and get assistance with this process if needed.

“The phone option was problematic,” she declared.

Councillor Aaron Burchat was asked if the change would save any money, and was told it would not.
