It’s that time of year where volunteers come out and clean up after others in Northumberland County.
Among
the volunteers continue to come out and cleanup area roads and highways are Lorna Dickson and Chris Clark.
Both people have been cleaning up around the Port Hope, Cobourg and Grafton area for years.
Several years along Dickson, Clark and other volunteers cleaned up an area of Theatre Road and Telephone Road.
It was the first time it had been done in years, maybe even decades.
When the group was finished they’d collected over 300 bags of garbage.
On Sunday they were both out cleaning the Highway 401 eastbound on-ramp at Wesleyville in the Municipality of Port Hope.
Dickson said this year she’s found the garbage along the roadways is worse than previous years.
“Some of the areas that are easier to clean-up are definitely worse.”
Items including diapers, household garbage, diesel containers, large pee bottles that are filled.
“It’s sad.”
Every piece of garbage along the highway and roadways was intentionally thrown out.
“At one side of the 401 it was just mounds of coffee cups – it was just unbelievable.”
Clarke said there were beer cans, alcohol containers strewn along the roads.
“We got a lot of them this year. I thought they were dying off,” said Dickson.
Although they couldn’t finish the Wesleyville on-ramp on Sunday, they will be out tomorrow.
As Dickson said, when the ditches are clean, “it looks so good.”
