A home in Brighton was heavily damaged by fire that started in a vehicle and spread to the home early Monday morning (March 17, 2025).
Brighton Fire Department were called to the home on Chapel Street around 2 a.m. after neighbours across the street were awakened by the sounds of exploding tires.
When they looked outside a van which was parked in the driveway of the home was engulfed in flames which were spreading to the two-storey home.
Two neighbours ran across the street and alerted the family (two adults, two children) of the blaze.
At the time, smoke alarms which were in the home weren’t activated because the fire was on the exterior of the house.
Everyone made it out safely, but the home was heavily damaged by the fire. A neighbouring home was also damaged by the radiant heat.
Brighton Fire Chief Gene Thompson said the fire originated in the vehicle and spread to the home.
Damage is estimated at approximately $350,000.
