Smoke Detector Sends Cobourg Fire Department to Transition House Numerous Times

In Local

In these cases, Cobourg Fire has responded to four instances of smoke detected at the shelter:

Three instances related to cooking fumes

One instance related to construction

Transition House staff have sincerely appreciated the support from the Fire Department, including a meeting to discuss mitigation strategies to ensure safety within this congregate setting, while enabling use of cooking wares. As an outcome of this meeting, Transition House will be switching from ‘smoke’ detectors in common cooking spaces to ‘heat’ detectors, to mitigate further non-fire incidents. While these replacements are underway, cooking wares such as toasters and air fryers have been removed, with microwaves and kettles remaining in place for use by guests.

Transition House also plans to arrange for inspection and certification of the on-site commercial kitchen in the near future, and will be seeking funding for a dietary services lead to prepare meals 1-2 times a day for clients. Centralizing cooking activities to this space will further mitigate the risk of future non-fire incidents.
