Video – Wrong-Way Drivers Continue to Create Safety Concerns on Cobourg One-Way Street

In Local, Photo Gallery, Police Blotter

Another weekend brought another wave of motorists travelling the wrong way on one of Cobourg’s downtown one-way streets.

In approximately one hour on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at least 10 vehicles were observed driving the wrong way on Charles Street south of Queen Street, despite clearly posted one-way signs.

The problem has become a familiar sight on busy summer weekends. While some of the drivers may be local, many are believed to be visitors unfamiliar with Cobourg’s downtown street layout.

The situation creates potentially dangerous encounters for motorists travelling in the correct direction. On numerous occasions during the hour, drivers proceeding legally along Charles Street were suddenly confronted by vehicles heading directly toward them.

Fortunately, no collisions were reported during the period observed. However, the repeated violations continue to raise concerns about safety in the downtown core.

The one-way designation is clearly marked with signage at the entrance to the street, yet the number of motorists ignoring or missing the signs suggests the problem persists. Whether caused by driver distraction, reliance on GPS navigation, or unfamiliarity with the area, the result is the same: a dangerous situation that repeats itself almost every weekend.
