The 16th annual Port Hope Firefighters Association Hockey Tournament takes place this weekend.

The tournament kicked off on Friday, April 5, 2024 at 6 p.m. with Northumberland County Paramedics taking on the Port Hope Firefighters.

Retired Port Hope District Fire Chief Glenn Case dropped the puck to officially start the tournament which features eight teams from around Northumberland County.

“It started 18 years ago just from a bunch of firefighters who wanted the opportunity to network and celebrate the job and its progressed into this event which raises funds for our Association,” said organizer Bob Cranley who is a Station Captain with the Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services.

Money from the event goes to the Port Hope Firefighters Association which supports the maintenance of the Associations antique fire apparatus including a 1929 Bickle firetruck which was the town’s first motorized firetruck and a 1958 Bickle Seagrave which is from the former Hope Township.

Funds also go to various charities locally.

“It’s a fun tournament. We had a trophy for the first couple of years and we tried to award it to the winner, but it’s since been lost – so it’s bragging rights only.”

“Northumberland County is so big that not all the firefighters get to chat, so this is an opportunity to see our firefighting brothers and sisters.”
