Potentially Deadly Drug Paraphernalia Found Near Children’s School and in Playground in Cobourg

A sign of the times with potentially deadly drug paraphernalia discarded near a school and playground in Cobourg.

On Friday, April 5, 2024 drug paraphernalia was discarded directly across from C.R. Gummow School and in the children’s playground in Victoria Park.

Cobourg Police Chief Paul VandeGraaf stated he has been told by the provincial prosecutor not to forward any possession offences.

“If we find people with a simple amount of drugs, the drugs will be seized and destroyed,” VandeGraaf stated at a December 2023 Police Services Board meeting.

But a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) stated, “the laying of charges falls within the jurisdiction of the police, not the PPSC.”

Today’s Northumberland has reached out to VandeGraaf for clarification, but has not heard back.
