Cobourg Police held a Virtual Polar Plunge in honour of the Special Olympics Ontario on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.

A number of officers, including Special Constables, Auxilary, civilian and even the Police Chief participated in the outdoor event on Wednesday afternoon at the Police Station on King Street in Cobourg.

Sergeant Mike Richardson said the event, “Freezin for a Reason” was to raise money for the Special Olympics which are celebrating 35 years of law enforcement involvement.

Richardson announced that Cobourg Police Service has raised over $3,500 for the Special Olympics.

Special Constable Julie Liscombe raised closed to $1,200.

Chief Paul VandeGraaf was bombarded with eight buckets of ice filled water, but took it all in stride.

“This is fun. Police Associations across Ontario and the OACP (Ontario Association of Chief’s of Police) have been supporting Special Olympics for years raising millions of dollars.”

“So if people like me have to do foolish things like this so young people get an opportunity to engage in Special Olympics – it’s all worth it.”

VandeGraaf also commented it was a chance for the members to get together for a great cause.

“Water was really cold. It was full of snow. The pain that that felt was worth it to see the laughs and smiles on my team if nothing else.”

The service also participates in the Special Olympics Torch Run each year.
