The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has recovered a stolen vehicle and charged one individual following a search in the Municipality of Trent Hills.
On September 16, 2026, at approximately 2:15 p.m., an officer was on patrol on County Road 35 when the in-cruiser Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system alerted them to a stolen vehicle. The same vehicle had earlier been observed travelling eastbound on Highway 401 near Cobourg and failed to stop for police shortly after 9:00 a.m. The passenger vehicle had been reported stolen from the Niagara Region earlier this week.
The vehicle was last observed travelling northbound on County Road 25. Officers later attempted to stop the vehicle at a commercial property in Hastings; however, it again failed to stop for police.
A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned on Lakeshore Drive.
An increased police presence was observed in the area while officers, assisted by the OPP Canine Unit (K9), conducted a search.
One individual was located in a nearby field and taken into custody. Police remained in the area until approximately 5:30 p.m. Northumberland OPP would like to thank local residents for their patience and cooperation during the investigation.
In addition to a number of Highway Traffic Act offences, a 17-year-old from Quebec has been charged with:
– Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
– Dangerous operation – two counts
– Flight from peace officer – two counts
The individual shall not be identified in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).
The accused was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
