Four commercial vehicles were pulled off the road Wednesday after Northumberland OPP and Ministry of Transportation inspectors uncovered a series of safety violations during a five-hour inspection blitz in Grafton.
The commercial motor vehicle inspection was held September 16 at the MTO yards just south of Highway 401.
In total, 11 commercial motor vehicles were inspected during the operation.
Of those 11 inspections, four vehicles were placed out of service and were not permitted to continue operating until repairs were completed.
That means more than one-third of the commercial vehicles inspected were deemed to have safety issues serious enough to keep them off the road.
Inspectors laid 20 charges for a variety of safety violations.
The enforcement action went even further in two cases.
Because of the seriousness of some of the violations discovered during the inspections, two licence plates were removed — one from a commercial motor vehicle and another from a trailer.
The joint operation was conducted by Northumberland OPP and MTO inspectors as part of their ongoing efforts to identify commercial vehicles that may pose a danger to drivers and other road users.
While only 11 vehicles were inspected during the five-hour blitz, the results highlighted the importance of roadside commercial vehicle enforcement — with four vehicles requiring repairs before they could legally return to the road.
