Poppy Stones Help Bring People Together for Remembrance Day

In Community, Local

A Port Hope artist has created painted poppy stones honouring Canada’s bravest.

Lee Higginson said the idea originally came from Gordy Battersby.

“In a year where nothing has felt “normal”, it seemed like a nice way to build a feeling of connection. The Remembrance Day ceremony is very dear to many people, and creating a new way to celebrate felt important.”

Battersby collected the stones and delivered them to Hope Street Terrace where residents including a 103-year-old put the first coat of paint on the stones.

With the help from Gord and Melinda and the seniors of Hope Street Terrace, Higginson said it made the project very memorable.

“Knowing it involved Verena, who is 103 and lived through the last global pandemic as well as both world wars, was especially poignant.”

“Even in this time where connection feels more difficult, it’s possible to still work as a team, and as a community, and create new ways to celebrate.”

Higginson worked on painting the poppy stones on her front porch and with the help from her children, and permission from the Municipality of Port Hope she placed them on the cenotaph on Tuesday, November 10, 2020.
