Snowbirds Fly Over Lakeshore in Northumberland – Twice – And Will Again On Sunday

In Editor Choice, Local

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds flew over the lakeshore on Saturday, May 9, 2020 – twice.

This year marks the 50th year the Snowbirds have been flying the same jet, the Canadian made Tutor.

Starting in Nova Scotia the nine-jet formation is flying across Canada to honour Canadians doing their part in the fight against COVID-19.

On Saturday, the Snowbirds flew along the lakeshore starting in Trenton before going north over Northumberland Hills Hospital and then towards Toronto.

But just a few minutes later, they were headed back east to CFB Trenton because of bad weather towards the Toronto area including – snow.

The Snowbirds will be following the same route on Sunday – if the weather cooperates.

Today’s Northumberland reached out to the Snowbirds who said the closer they got to Toronto the less visibility there was – near zero conditions.

Essentially the Snowbirds input the GPS coordinates of hospitals, including Northumberland Hills Hospital and due their best to fly over the area.

When not flying, due to COVID-19, the Snowbirds are basically put into isolation until the next day.

“We took off out of 8 Wing Trenton and the scenery was beautiful throughout Northumberland County. We were hoping to work our way through the lakeshore area into Toronto. We were able to make it over Bright, Cobourg and Port Hope and were happy we could make that much happen.”
