The Municipality of Port Hope is putting the accent on civic pride leading up to the annual Port Hope Civic Awards Ceremony, a celebration of individuals and groups who have contributed to the vitality of the community.

Mayor Bob Sanders said in the press release that this program is an opportunity for the municipality to recognize the talents and efforts of community members in an open public forum.

“Community volunteerism is a cornerstone of this community, and I would encourage individuals to submit nomination forms for all of those who should be celebrated for their dedication and commitment to the municipality.”

The program was established by council in 1987 as a way to highlight the variety of elements that make up the municipality’s inspiring culture by acknowledging those who contribute time, talent and resources towards improving the community’s quality of life.

A broad range of categories awaits this year’s nominations: outstanding citizen, outstanding youth, agriculture, arts and culture, athletics, community service, inspiration, philanthropy and environment.

Last year, 88 individuals and team members were recognized at the awards ceremony, with Madison Taylor singled out as Outstanding Youth.

Committee chair Keri-Lee Kroeger hopes for an enthusiastic response to this year’s call.

“Submitting a thoughtful nomination is a sincere way to applaud the successes and generosity of your friends, neighbours and colleagues,” Kroeger said in the announcement.

“The Civic Awards Committee calls on this community to help us identify and salute Port Hope’s unsung heroes, exceptional achievers and tremendously talented.”

Nominations can be submitted on-line and through regular mail. Nomination forms, as well as more information about the awards and eligibility criteria, can be found at //porthope.ca/civic-awards. Entries will be received until close of business on March 5.

And on April 23, everyone is invited to the awards ceremony at 7 p.m. in the Cameco Capitol Arts Centre. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served.
