It was a special day at the Cobourg Fire Department on Saturday, November 16, 2019 as four junior firefighters were recruited – for the day.

Cobourg resident Lynda Casey was the winner of four passes for children to have breakfast with members of the Cobourg Fire Department at a recent Northumberland United Way event.

Casey graciously gave the tickets to her friend Kelly Morris who took her two children, Waylon (age 10) and Farah (age 9) along with their cousins Madison (age 10) and Macy (age 7).

The fire department picked the children up sharply at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Morris said the children were “super excited” and as soon as the two firetrucks showed up – the children were out the door.

Once their seat belts were on, it was off to the fire department on Elgin Street for breakfast, a tour of the firehall and a few surprises.

After everyone had breakfast which was cooked by the firefighters and fit for royalty it was off for a tour of the hall and some training.

The children were shown where the firefighters work and sleep at night along with a few historical pieces of memorabilia.

Then, it was the obstacle course. Donning bunker gear one by one the children had to drag the hose, break down a door, crawl through (simulated) smoke to rescue a baby, then extinguish a fire.

After they were shown the firetrucks and some other equipment including extrication tools.

It was approximately noon before the children accompanied by Morris and Casey got the ride back in the fire trucks.

“They thought it was totally unbelievable and to realize the firefighters came in on their day off was so special for everyone.”

Morris said the favorite part of the day for the kids was the obstacle course.

“When they got home they couldn’t stop talking about it.”

Breakfast was amazing and they thought saving the baby was “really cool.”

Even for the two adults who got to ride in the firetruck, Morris added, “I felt like a kid again.”
