Field Work Around the Waterfront Boardwalk Takes Place in Cobourg

Selected native vegetation will be transplanted as part of construction preparation
The Town of Cobourg would like to advise residents of work taking place around the Cobourg waterfront boardwalk this week to relocate selected native vegetation.

The Town of Cobourg is continuing to work with engineering consultant CIMA on the detailed design of the boardwalk as well as with Beacon Environmental on the upcoming field work that
is to be conducted this fall, in preparation for the replacement of the boardwalk in the spring.

Beacon has been to the site to identify native vegetation that should be transplanted to a location where they will continue to thrive and not be damaged during the removal/replacement
of the boardwalk.

The transplant work is scheduled to take place on October 19 and 20, 2023. The transplant locations will be in close proximity to their current locations, just enough to be out of the way of
construction. Following the transplanting, Town staff will conduct the removal of vegetation within the construction zone under Beacon’s supervision, to prepare for work in the spring. The
fall is the best time to remove this vegetation when plants are dormant, and birds are not in nesting season.

Background: Waterfront Boardwalk
The Town of Cobourg’s waterfront boardwalk — which spans from Ontario Street to Hibernia Street, including north-south connections to Ontario Street, Bagot Street, and Durham Street
— was constructed over 15 years ago. The current boardwalk was determined to be at the end of its service life. In May and June, the Town had a public engagement project to gather
community feedback on the design of the new waterfront boardwalk’s design elements.

In July, Council approved moving forward with a pressure treated wood material for decking and a recycled plastic/composite material for the substructure of an at-grade (non-elevated)
boardwalk.

Next Steps for the Boardwalk Replacement Project
The Town will be tendering a request for quotation for the boardwalk materials this fall. Upon receipt of the materials, the boardwalk will be assembled offsite as much as possible in
sections by Public Works staff.

The sections will then be transported and installed/connected at the site, following the same process as the original boardwalk construction. This is an efficient method that also minimizes
disruption to private property owners adjacent to the boardwalk.

The Town thanks residents and guests for their understanding and patience during the Waterfront Boardwalk construction process.
