Despite grey skies and steady rain keeping most visitors away from Cobourg’s waterfront, the Canadian brigantine tall ship Fair Jeanne provided a striking sight while docked on the east pier on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
The 110-foot vessel towered above a mostly deserted Victoria Beach, its masts rising 80 feet into the overcast sky as it overlooked a shoreline that is typically bustling with beachgoers on a summer long weekend.
Operated by Bytown Brigantine, Fair Jeanne is one of Canada’s best-known youth sail training ships. Built in Ottawa by Captain Thomas G. Fuller, the brigantine sails primarily on the Great Lakes, introducing young people to the traditions and skills of life under sail.
The ship measures 110 feet (33.5 metres) in length with a beam of 24.6 feet (7.5 metres) and carries approximately 4,500 square feet of sail. It can accommodate up to 36 trainees and crew.
Each summer, youth between the ages of 14 and 18 participate in hands-on training aboard the vessel, learning sail handling, navigation, steering, seamanship, and standing watch while experiencing life as part of a working crew.
A crew member said the Fair Jeanne is expected to remain in Cobourg for another day and will likely depart on Tuesday, weather permitting.
While the weather kept the usual crowds away from Victoria Park and Victoria Beach, a handful of families embraced the damp conditions, taking advantage of the quiet shoreline and enjoying a rare moment of solitude along one of Cobourg’s busiest summer destinations.
For those who ventured to the waterfront, the visit of the historic tall ship offered an unexpected glimpse into Canada’s maritime heritage against the dramatic backdrop of Lake Ontario.
