The best 8 Metre yachts in North America have arrived in Cobourg as the 2026 North American 8 Metre Class Championships get underway on the waters of Lake Ontario this weekend.

Hosted by the Cobourg Yacht Club, the three-day championship brings together six classic yachts from across Canada and the United States to compete in one of sailing’s most prestigious keelboat classes.

The regatta begins Friday with three races scheduled, followed by another three races on Saturday and two final races on Sunday. Over the course of eight races, crews will battle for the North American championship while navigating the often challenging conditions that Lake Ontario can deliver.

The fleet features an even international split, with three Canadian boats taking on three competitors from the United States. The championship promises close racing as experienced sailors from both sides of the border showcase the skill, teamwork and tactical decision-making that define the historic 8 Metre class.

Originally developed under the International Rule in the early 1900s, 8 Metre yachts are renowned for their elegant lines, exceptional craftsmanship and rich racing heritage. Although they are no longer Olympic boats, the class continues to attract passionate sailors who appreciate the combination of tradition, performance and competitive racing.

For the Cobourg Yacht Club, hosting the North American Championship is an opportunity to welcome some of the continent’s finest sailors while showcasing Cobourg Harbour and the outstanding sailing conditions found on the western end of Lake Ontario.

With eight races scheduled over three days, weather and wind conditions will play a major role in determining this year’s champion. Spectators along Cobourg’s waterfront may catch glimpses of the distinctive yachts racing just offshore as crews compete for North American bragging rights in one of sailing’s most celebrated classes.
