Proclamation Confirms Northumberland County’s Commitment to Reconciliation

In City Hall

Northumberland County council passed a proclamation at Wednesday’s meeting to designate June as National Indigenous History Month and June 21 as National Indigenous Peoples Day.

This builds on the county’s commitment to building meaningful mutually beneficial relationships with Indigenous communities – which is referenced at every council meeting with their territorial acknowledgement that the county is located “on the shared treaty and traditional territories of the Michi Saagiig (Mississauga Anishinaabeg) and the Williams Treaties First Nations.”

Port Hope Mayor Olena Hankivsky asked if anything is being done beyond a simple proclamation, and Director of Communications Kate Campbell replied that there are some plans.

“We are currently sourcing a Mississauga flag for the Community Flag Pole for June 21,” Campbell noted.

As well, EarlyON staff are working with the local Indigenous Friendship Centre to plan activities around this day.

“And we are having conversations with the Peterborough Friendship Centre and, additionally, with some of our other Indigenous partners about planning for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in September,” she added
