Cobourg Man’s Sentencing From ATV Collision Delayed Due To Outbreak at CECC

In Local, Police Blotter

A Cobourg man facing charges of impaired driving and drive while disqualified had his charges put over another month because of a COVID-19 outbreak at the Central East Corrections Centre in Lindsay.

Matthew Fry, age 29, is charged with impaired driving, drive over 80, and drive while disqualified resulting from a collision on October 24, 2020 in Cramahe Township.

Just before 5:00 pm, emergency services responded to a report of a collision involving two All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) on County Road 21 just east of County Road 25 in Cramahe Township.

Two ATVs towing utility trailers full of wood were travelling on County Road 21 when they flipped over into the north side ditch. Fry was trapped and had to be extricated with the help of all emergency services who first removed the wood from the trailer, then lifted the trailer. They then removed the ATV which was on top of the Fry. Both riders were transported by paramedics to a local area hospital.

Jason King (age 50) of Alnwick-Haldimand Township was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Fry recovered from his injuries and was subsequently charged.

Fry’s lawyer stated to the court on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 there was supposed to be a plea and sentencing, “where custody was anticipated.”

“Obviously given the current state of the outbreak status at Central East Correctional Centre, we would be seeking a adjournment in the matter so we can have him sentenced when there is no longer outbreak status.”

Justice Mark Moorcroft agreed stating, “hopefully it’s under control by then” and the case was put over to March 1, 2022 for plea and sentencing at 9:30 a.m.
