Cobourg Council – Henderson Shares County News

In City Hall

Mayor John Henderson shared several items of Northumberland County council news at this week’s Cobourg council meeting.

Golden Plough Lodge-Northumberland County Archives and Museum – This project was approved with a $96,770,321 debenture over 25 years. The hope is that it will be built by 2022.

Producer Responsibility Model – The province is moving to a Producer Responsibility model of recycling that puts the onus on the producers of these materials. In Northumberland County, this will affect the Material Recovery Facility in Grafton, which will be put up for sale. The county passed a motion to begin the process of transitioning Jan. 1, 2023, and the new model will save the county $2.97-million annually. The county is hoping to become the producers’ liaison within its own boundaries through a service agreement, but this will require further investigation. The provinces plans to complete this transition by Jan. 1, 2025, and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario has asked municipalities to indicate their own intentions by June 30.

Unified Filming Policy – A policy that will apply to filming throughout the county, along with appropriate policies and procedures, is in the works.

County-wide development charges – A public meeting on this new initiative has been held, and that will come forward to the July 22 county-council meeting for approval.
