(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 235 incidents this past week, here are some examples:
May 7:
- A seasonal property owner on Stone Road in the Warkworth area reported his barn door pried open sometime over the winter months. Nothing was apparently taken. Evidence of ATV t racks were still visible and the investigation is ongoing.*
- Shortly before 3:00 a.m. a resident on Ontario Street in Hamilton Township reported hearing a ‘hissing noise’ that he described as sounding like a pipe venting. Officers arrived and immediately smelled natural gas. Hamilton Township Fire Department attended resulting in a partial road closure with evacuation plans being drawn up. Union Gas officials were expedited and upon arrival detected a leak at their nearby transfer pump station. No one was injured and Union Gas to investigate the cause of the leak.
- A resident on Herron Road in Alnwick-Haldimand Township reported observing a suspicious male in his backyard at approximately 11:00 p.m. He was described as between 20-30 years old, wearing a brownish/red short sleeved golf shirt, jeans and a Baseball cap on backwards. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the male who fle d on foot into the bush when discovered by the homeowner. No items were apparently taken or damaged.*
- May 8:
- At approximately 9:00 a.m. police responded to a report of a male attempting to break in to a truck parked at the commuter lot at County Road 30 and Highway 401 in Brighton. Officers checked the area and were unable to locate the suspect who was described as younger male dressed in a black sweatshirt. No damage was apparent to the truck.*
- Police attended a residence on County Road 2 in the Municipality of Port Hope in response to a burglar alarm. Officers found the home to be secure with no signs of forced entry.
- At approximately 9:00 p.m. police responded to a report of a two door sedan in the ditch on the 4< /span>th Line and Sylvan Glen Road in the Municipality of Port Hope. Officers located the uninjured driver, a 17 year old local youth, and determined that he lost control of the car on the recently gravelled road. No charges resulted and the vehicle was towed from the scene with undetermined damages.
- May 9:
- A property owner building a new home on Viewmount Avenue near Trent River Village reported ongoing vandalism to construction equipment and materials including building permits being destroyed. Investigation ongoing.*
- Police received a report of a stolen black/orange BMX ‘Encore Octave Custom’ bicycle sometime overnight from a vehicle parked in the driveway of a June Avenue residence in Hamilton Township.*
- Police responded to a domestic dispute in Brighton involving a couple who were reported to be arguing over a decision whether or not to marry each other. Officers separated them for the night. No charges resulted with this investigation.
- May 10:
- Police responded to a report of an intoxicated female walking on County Road 38 in the Campbellford area shortly before 1:30 a.m. Officers located the 39 year old woman and returned her home to a sober family member.
- Police attended a Colborne residence where two people were arguing over a $15 debt. Advice was given to both persons and no charges resulted.
- Police received a traffic complaint on County Road 45 in Hamilton Township where a motorist advised that a grey Saturn was tailgating her. The car with two teenage occupants was not located and no meaningful follow up was possible as the licence plate given was incorrect.
- Northumberland OPP officers investigated ten accidental 911 calls, fourteen motor vehicle collisions, 22 traffic related complaints and conducted eleven RIDE progra ms during this time period.
