Wild and Windy Night In Northumberland County

In Editor Choice, Photo Gallery, Weather

It was a wild night in Northumberland as emergency crews across the county were kept extremely busy due to the strong wind gusts.
A few ducks knew where to stay out of the wind while swimming in the Centennial pool in Cobourg. Just south from the pool, a number of “brave” souls ventured out into Lake Ontario windsurfing and surfing the waves. But the wind was to much for some kiteboarders and they called it a day.
A large cargo ship slowing travelled west into the wind making for a slow journey on the lake.
On Scriven Blvd. in Port Hope by Jocelyn Street a large tree came down bringing with it a hydro wire.
Police and firefighters had the unenviable task of waiting for hydro crews who had no estimated time of arrival for the call.
During one incident, OPP were blocked in because of fallen trees in Hamilton Township and had to wait for work crews to make a path for them to clear the area.
Just east of Burnham Street at Dale Road a hydro pole was snapped off at the bottom and was swaying in the breeze.
Hamilton Township fire crews worked at the intersection blocking vehicles from heading east on Dale Road.
There was a concern if the pole came down the wires would fall onto the south side of Burnham Street at the intersection, so Burnham Street between Dale Road and Danforth Road was also closed to traffic.
Alnwick/Haldimand Township firefighters were called to a grass fire in Alderville shortly before 10 p.m. but thankfully it was contained quickly.
The most serious incident at this time was shortly before 7 p.m. off on Lawson Road in where a tree fell on a six-year-old child trapping the child.
There is no word on the extent of the injuries.
