Northumberland OPP – Brighton Man Charged with Impaired and Dangerous Driving (Name Released)

In Police Blotter

Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged a driver following a two-vehicle collision in the Township of Cramahe.

On November 19, 2025, at approximately 6:40 p.m., police responded to a report of a collision near Barnes Road and County Road 2. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the local Fire Department attended the scene for non-life-threatening injuries sustained by both drivers.

Both passenger vehicles sustained significant damage, and the roadway was closed. The two motorists were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

During the investigation, officers spoke with one of the drivers and began an impaired operation investigation. The individual was taken into custody, and further tests were conducted.

As a result, Zachary TANSWELL (27), from Brighton, has been charged with:

Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Dangerous operation causing bodily harm

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in January 2026. A further 90-day Administrative Driver License Suspension (ADLS) and a 7-day vehicle impound was initiated as per statute.

The road was re-opened shortly before 9:00 p.m. when vehicles were removed and cleanup had completed.

If you know or suspect that a driver is impaired by alcohol or drugs, call 9-1-1. In doing so, you may save a life. Whether you are impaired by alcohol or drugs, impaired is impaired and driving under the influence of either is a criminal offence. If you plan on drinking or consuming drugs, plan to not drive. Instead, arrange for a designated driver, take a taxi or public transit, or come up with another plan that takes impaired driving out of the picture.
